Pond and Waterway Deicing

In the winter time there are many ways to deice around boats or dock or in a pond setting. Ice is prevented from forming by moving water upwards to the surface. For boat docks like the one below, there are 2 main ways to deice. One is to move water with an impeller an the other with air lifting systems. The impeller system is a submersed motor with a strong housing that is 2-3 feet below the surface of the water. Suspended at various angles and depths depending on the water opening required. The results of an impeller system are pictured below.

These units hang from the end of the dock or boat house. They are hung about 3 feet under the surface and can be pointed up for a large round opening. They can also be on an angle to make a long thinner ice opening for a boat or waterway. They come with tie ropes and cords either 25’, 50’ 100’ long, and in 115 or 220v motors.

The other system is to use air diffusers or air diffuser tubing on the bottom around the dock. These are supplied by air using a compressor built for the pressure and depth needed. One type of air diffuser system spaces out small air stones 24” below the surface around the dock perimeter. It can be rolled up during the summer months.

Here is a pond with an air diffuser on the bottom, as you can see the pond is well open for water fowl or fish oxygen needs. A Koenders windmill is supplying the air needed to keep this pond open.

You can use electric compressors ranging from 1/8 hp and up that are built for this type of service. It takes a unit that offers higher air volume and air pressure of 10-15 PSI. depending on depth.

Another benefit of winter aeration in a pond is to get rid of phosphates and decompose sludge reducing the nutrients for next year thus improving water quality and reducing algae. Call for more information on your deicing needs.
